I recall Pauline playing with the pounding rain on the roof of the Casa Del Popolo, and with the passing cars. My first deep listening exercise, I vividly recall the cynical me dissolving away as the emerging sound-world effected me profoundly. Many happy returns of the day!

The deep listening retreat I did with Pauline in 2006 is still happening now, the reverberations like little threads that keep influencing my present. I can taste every moment of that time because my spirit felt so open. And the laughter was very prominent especially in the silent meals. The concert of birds up in the mountain changed my life.
Happy Birthday Pauline! Live long (I know you will) because we need your beautiful spirit. Χρονια Πολλα! Nina Karacosta

A happy birthday to you, Pauline, and here's to many more. Your seminal 'Deep Listening' cd is one of my most treasured possessions. Extraordinarily powerful. I mentioned it recently in an article in London's Guardian newspaper as one of my great favourites from the last 50 years: "Sweeps all before it". To my mind it constitutes a hugely inspiring and important new beginning for a future connected to more than just 'things'. Love, best wishes and with great respect, Simon

Pauline! Many beautiful memories and I'll shout one by one this birthday month!
In Dartington DL's retreat, in the first listening meditation, suddenly a heavy rain came deliciously to our ears and bodies, then slowly the rain left and we finished the meditation. I was amazed, for some seconds I truly thought that was pre-recorded, then I really felt it as real, and it was real rain! and I thought what an amazing woman is Pauline! She can create rain! Washing all our worries and bringing us tuned into a retreat mood. Happy Birthday rain wizard!

Happy birthday, dearest Pauline, on your most auspicious 80th! Where do we begin? Our friendship spans decades with many, many stories. But one in particular still stands out even today. It takes place at our flats in San Francisco in the early 70s. Pauline has just come over for coffee with us. The table, with a double level setting, is set on the higher level. The table suddenly decides to lower itself to the other setting and in the space of a half second we see the coffee, cups, and saucers separate and then gather together with nary a drop spilled. It makes a huge crash in context of our then two year old Brian with his cousin in the kitchen banging on several pots and pans. A marvelous, continuing cacophony with that exclamation point in the middle of it all--a deep listening moment with many more to come!
Love to you!

A zillion memories. Here's one: We're at an organizational meeting for the Delaware River Sounding project back in 1994 with Riverkeeper Cynthia Poten. We're all chattering away sounding off our individual ideas as if we know everything. Except Pauline. Of course nothing is getting accomplished. Pauline speaks up. "Let's just listen for a while." Quiet happens. Pauline's magic. After the hush everything goes smoothly. Thank you, Pauline!

On a visit with Pauline at her house in La Jolla a bunch of us were camping out on her floor. I woke up the following morning with the sense that someone was staring at me. Bleary eyed I rolled over to find her parrot hopping from one leg to the other eying me very closely. The following morning I had a similar feeling and woke up to find her Tucan rocking its long beak about two inches from my head.

Pauline you have been a marvelous inspiration and mentor. I am so grateful for David introducing us. I wish you a wonderful 80th birthday and look forward to another rousing accordion performance on your 90th!

In 2007, we had the good fortune to have Pauline spend a week with us at De Monfort University. One thing I remember well from her performance is the very beginning, when she closed her eyes and slowly opened the bellows of the accordion––it made a lovely inhaling sound, from which everything that followed seemed to emanate.

A more amusing anecdote occurred one night when we had said goodbye and she was walking to her hotel. It dawned on me that she was walking through a dodgy part of town, so I ran after her. When I caught up, out of breath, and explained my concern, she replied, “Well, I do have a black belt in karate, you know.”

Happy Birthday, Pauline! I look forward to the performances and anecdotes that will have accumulated when we reach your ninetieth :-)

I studied with Pauline at Mills College in 2000. I was writing a piece in which I thought I had too personal of a musical reference. I asked her if she thought it would be OK. Pauline never spoke too directly in her lessons, she would never say anything like "do this" or "don't do this"....Her answer was, "Think of a bird flying over a lake. It is not aware of its reflection as it passes over that lake."

Happy 80th Pauline! Thanks for all you've done.

In 1996, Pauline Oliveros planned and coordinated an improvisational, impressionistic event in the State Capitol Rotunda in Sacramento, California. During the lunch hour, people who walked through the rotunda provided the initiating sounds which the flute, cello, violin, accordion, and marimba played back to them so subtly that many in the "audience" did not realize they were participating in a "concert." That event opened my eyes, ears, and mind to new music in ways that continue to enable me to celebrate the sounds of our contemporary world as revealed to us by the compositions of new music composers. Happy Birthday, Pauline Oliveros! And thank you!
